1. Secure some items in your pocket

Whenever I am traveling with a budget airline that strictly enforces carry-on luggage weight limits, I make it a point to weigh my bag again right before reaching the boarding gate. In case I sense that the weight is nearing 7 kilograms, then some of my belongings get transferred to my pockets!

As part of my pre-flight ritual, I always ensure that my jacket pocket on the “window side” contains both my phone and Kindle. This way, I can access them easily without disturbing the unfortunate individual seated in the middle.

2. Ensure you have corded construction earplugs and a keepcup within easy reach

Being a light sleeper, I always carry corded construction earplugs with me. Before taking my seat on a long-haul flight, I ensure to place them in my pocket. Even if they come off during the journey, there is no chance of misplacing them and enduring sleep deprivation because of others’ snoring sounds.

Since Covid, it is now deemed permissible to use keepcups. Therefore, I make sure to have one in my carry-on at all times. Apart from assisting with waste reduction, reusable cups usually hold more wine and flight attendants are generally contented with the request as per my observations.

3. Observe people from a distance

Before boarding a plane, I always observe fellow passengers at the gate as they use various techniques – subtle or obvious – to board before their assigned row. Knowing that my seat will be waiting for me on the aircraft once I board, why bother standing in line behind someone who disregards social distancing rules? Instead, it’s best to sit at the boarding gate and avoid any potential inconvenience.

4. Consume a sufficient amount of tea

Whenever I fly multiple times a year, I make it a point to grab myself some peppermint or chamomile tea from the airport café before boarding. Not only is this an excellent trick for staying hydrated at the start of my journey, but also helps me doze off in-flight after having my meal (if there’s one).

5. Remove your makeup

It is essential to remove your make-up so that your skin can breathe. Additionally, I purchase facial mist spray and moisturizing face masks at airports and apply them during my flight for hydration.

6. Put some items on the vacant seat beside you

Initially, I was hesitant to share my strategy since I prefer not divulging this tip to everyone. Nonetheless, as our reader is dependable and trustworthy, here it goes: Upon boarding the plane and prior to your seatmates’ arrival (provided that they haven’t already) place either your jacket or handbag on the empty seat beside you. This action will indicate occupancy of said space so if by chance nobody booked there beforehand then voila! You can enjoy stretching out throughout the whole flight stress-free without obstruction from anyone else taking up excess room. With flights often completely full these days, opportunities for securing additional legroom are infrequent but when provided truly a delightful privilege whilst airborne!

7. To secure your preferred seat, make an early booking

A good seat can make or break your flying experience, making it the most crucial aspect to consider. My preferred choice is Seat 2C – located at the front of the aircraft and on an aisle; besides being able to avail priority meal service. Alternatively, I am content with seats in aisles ranging from 3-10 for a comfortable journey or opting for emergency exit rows if requiring additional legroom.
